Abstract The Online Course Evaluation System (OCES) is a home-developed Web based platform for educational assessment. OCES allows for administration of course evaluations. On the one hand, instructors gain feedback on their performance, which helps to improve the quality of teaching. On the other hand, course evaluations increase the sway and participation of students and enable them to compare courses and choose the best ones. While evaluating courses students remain anonymous. Therefore, the risk of socially desirable responding and other biases are reduced. In OCES, all the processes involved in evaluating courses are automated: generation of passwords for the students, administration of courses and of instructors, detailed reporting of results etc. The results of the evaluations are immediately available on the Web. With OCES it is no longer necessary to print and distribute evaluation forms on paper. Also, questionnaire data do not need to be entered into the computer by hand. However, as an all-in-one tool OCES also integrates and supports conventional paper based evaluations. OCES has been successfully used for course evaluations at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg during the summer semester 2003. All in all, 63 instructors had 84 courses evaluated. Students submitted 2031 evaluation forms. Besides presenting the functionalities of OCES, we will discuss empirical results on methodological issues. For example, we compare different facets of data quality (e.g., item nonresponse, overall response rates, length of answers to open-ended questions) in online versus offline evaluations. Moreover, attention is paid to the influence of survey mode on evaluation results.
